What is speed reading, and does it really work?
Speed readingis the skill of increasing your reading speed while preserving comprehension. This field is full of exaggerated claims, so let's be honest: research shows trained readers can reach up to 400 words per minute while largely preserving comprehension, but at higher speeds — especially with dense texts — comprehension inevitably drops. So be skeptical of “1000+ words per minute” promises. A realistic, achievable goal is going from, say, 200 to 350–400 wpm.

The science behind speed reading
The eye doesn't glide in a straight line while reading; it makes short pauses (fixations, ~200–250 ms each) and small jumps (saccades), and occasionally moves back (regression). Sharp vision is only possible at the center of the eye (fovea), so “seeing a whole line at once” is physiologically limited. Speed gains come not from magical peripheral vision, but from reducing unnecessary fixations and regressions, pausing less by chunking, and lowering subvocalization pressure. Leading reading researchers (e.g. Keith Rayner, Stanislas Dehaene) place the comprehension-preserving upper limit at around 400 words per minute.
Speed reading techniques that work
- Reduce regression: The eye frequently going back to earlier words can eat roughly 30% of total reading time. A pacer (moving marker) prevents this.
- Reduce inner speech (subvocalization): Silently saying words in your mind pins speed to speaking rate (150–250 wpm). RSVP lowers this pressure.
- Read in chunks: Perceiving words in groups of 2–3 rather than one at a time reduces the number of fixations.
- Widen your eye span: The Schulte table strengthens peripheral vision and attention; it trains you to see a wider area per glance.
