How to take a typing test

The OnParmak typing test is the most practical way to measure how fast and accurately you type. Choose a duration (1, 2, or 3 minutes) and a punctuation mode, then start typing the text on screen; when time is up, your words per minute (WPM), characters per minute, and accuracy are calculated instantly. The test starts with the most common English words, so you measure your real typing speed.

What do WPM and CPM mean?

WPM (words per minute) is the net number of correct words you type in one minute, and CPM is characters per minute. 30–40 WPM is average, 50–70 WPM is good, and 90+ WPM is professional. Measure your speed regularly and track your progress on the typing statistics page.

Ways to improve your typing speed

The key to speed is touch typing and regular practice. To learn from scratch, start with typing lessons, then build finger control with typing exercises. For motivation, race real opponents in the live typing race, and practice on longer passages with international practice texts.

Test results: error heat map and finger analysis

The OnParmak typing test doesn't only measure your speed β€” it also shows you how to improve. When the test ends, an error heat map highlights the letters you mistype most (darker = more frequent). A finger speed analysis then uses your keystroke timing to show which finger is slow, in color on two hand diagrams (red = needs work). This lets you strengthen your weak letters and fingers with targeted typing lessons and adaptive practice.

Typing test on mobile

You don't need a computer for a mobile typing test: OnParmak works on phones and tablets. Tap the typing area, type the text with your mobile keyboard, and press the space bar after each word. For the most accurate result, turn off your keyboard's autocorrect and word prediction. This way you can measure your real typing speed (WPM β€” words per minute) on your phone too.

Frequently asked questions

οΌ‹What is a typing test?

A typing test is a free online tool that measures how many words and characters you can type correctly in a set time (1, 2, or 3 minutes). It reports your words per minute (WPM), characters per minute (CPM), and accuracy.

οΌ‹What is WPM and how is it calculated?

WPM (words per minute) is the net number of correct words you type in one minute. The total characters typed are divided by five and scaled to the duration; errors are subtracted. On OnParmak, your result is calculated automatically.

οΌ‹What is a good typing speed?

An average user types 30–40 words per minute. 50–70 WPM is good, 70–90 is very good, and 90+ WPM is professional. With touch typing and regular practice, most people can pass 60 WPM quickly.

οΌ‹How can I improve my typing speed?

The fastest way is to learn touch typing and practice regularly: 15–20 minutes a day, correct finger placement, and focusing on accuracy before speed. OnParmak Lessons, Exercises, and the live Typing Race help you practice faster.

οΌ‹Is the typing test free? Do I need an account?

The test is completely free and works without an account. If you sign up, your test history, progress statistics, and leaderboard ranking are saved.

οΌ‹Can I take the typing test on my phone?

Yes. The OnParmak typing test works on phones and tablets: tap the typing area and type with your mobile keyboard, pressing the space bar after each word. For the most accurate result, turn off your keyboard's autocorrect and word prediction (don't tap the suggested words).

οΌ‹Which keyboard layout is supported?

The QWERTY layout is fully supported. Lessons, tests, and races all use QWERTY.

οΌ‹Can I see which letters and fingers are weak?

Yes. After the test, the result screen shows two analyses: (1) an error heat map β€” the letters you mistype most, marked by color intensity (darker = more often); (2) a finger speed analysis β€” which finger is slow, shown in color on two hand diagrams. Adaptive practice is also suggested for the letters you struggle with.
